Evaluation Question Seven.

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Firstly, after tons of research of different magazines based around the same genres of music as mine, I found that each of them had a colour regime in which they stuck to throughout every page of the magazine. Most of them consisted of no more than four colours throughout the magazine and each colour seemed to be used on most pages, organised brilliantly. I developed on to this by using the same technique for myself, which proved to be correct from the audience feedback given. The way in which my product challenges other media products regarding the colour scheme is because the three colours i have used seem to stand out, and look as though they go together. Therefore may stand out more than some other magazines which are flashed in all kinds of bright colours.

Secondly, there is the situation on the front cover of the magazine which is purposely put there in order to persuade the audience and have them wanting to buy the magazine to gain information on the situation. Because of this, I believe that the subject is attracting the audience to buy the magazine. This challenges other media products as they may not have such a flashy situation as mine does. I never really developed this idea from any other media product and thought of it myself due to the persuasion that it holds. However, it does use what other magazines may use with little sub headings that may say something along the lines of "Oasis Reunion?" to attract the attention of the audience.

Evaluation Question Six.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Before the preliminary task, i never really had much of a clue about most technologies on the mac such as inDesign, and barely Photoshop. Because of this, i decided to stick to my strengths rather than spend un-needed time on learning and developing my skills on other software when i could use photoshop which i knew things about. Throughout the preliminary, i developed more and more skills regarding photoshop, enabling me to become prepared for the main task better. I learnt about every side tool, every effect and most other general components which helped my magazine be improved and stand out. I decided to avoid the likes of InDesign due to me not knowing what to do on it barely. I also thought that photoshop would be an easier piece of software for me as it just suited what i wanted to do, and turned out to be simple when i got to know most of the general components. Throughout my research and planning, i also used a variety of software to present my work in, most in which i never knew existed before the time. Prezi is just one of them, along with Slideshare. I felt that the different software like the two mentioned opened up a variety on what I could do, making it more creative and attractive as well.

As i did my magazine on photoshop, i obviously learnt the more complex tools and editing effects the longer i went on with the magazine. The tools at the side of the page became very easy for me to understand, allowing me to use each of them for the benefit of my work. I also discovered many other features that was sort of unheard about for me before the product was being made. Things such as lighting and photography became simple for me as the course of the product went on. I learnt that a variety of shades effected each thing in my magazine in a different way. Regarding the photography, I barely knew much about cameras, and how they worked regarding all the different options with the buttons on them. After a little bit of self-research and time with the cameras, i easily managed to figure out what each button meant and what they did.

Evaluation Question Five.

How did you attract/address your audience?

The main way in which I believe I attracted the audience to my magazine is by having a persuasive front cover that makes people want to know more about the mask situation I had put in. I put a remark underneath the main image on the front of the cover saying "Find who's hiding under the mask". I believe that this lures the audience in to wanting to gain more information and actually find out who is hiding under the mask. Because of this, they would hopefully buy the magazine. After researching different magazines that are similar to mine, I had found a few components which mainly attracted the audience to their product. The stand out components i had found from the magazines i looked at was that the colours used represented the company. For example, the company NME tends to use the colour red a lot more than most of any other colours. I believe that it is almost seen as a trademark for the company having certain different colours. Because of this, i feel as though that one of the main reasons why the audience would have been attracted to the colour scheme i used. I seemed to use the colours yellow, black and white throughout the magazine making them my trademark colours.

The way in which i addressed the audience was by including them in having their own say on the mask situation on the double page spread. I gave out the information and suggestions but left the job for the audience to find out what exactly was happening. I feel as though this is a massive positive as it enables the audience to get involved and have their very own say. As well as this, i also left a link to the twitter page of the magazine company for them to get in contact that way also.

Evaluation Question Four.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The main target audience for my magazine are varied out. This is because it can be brought by people who are between the years of 17 and 25. As well as this, because the two main genres of music being represented are rap and indie, it suggests a massive variation of audience for many different social groups. With the gender tipping towards the male side regarding the rap music, I inserted an indie band that the females may like when they are young adults. Because of this, I hoped that the target audience would be for both males and females, opening up a larger, more wider target audience enabling the magazine to be open for more people, meaning my magazine will sell a lot more than it would have for just one genre.

I feel as though the balance between the indie and rap genres are around 50/50. This is because on the front cover, more rappers are named than indie bands, where as the whole double page spread is dominated by an indie band. I feel as though that because the picture on the front cover shows an indie band member, then the indie folk would definitely want to buy the magazine to know more. That's why one of the many target audiences are young indie lovers.

Teens and young adults would be the rime target audience when considering age due to the fact that they would be the ones who would be interested in a music magazine rather than the older, more mature audience. I feel as though the teen target audience is the better target audience to go for as it opens up a massive variety of people and represents each of them in their separate ways.

Evaluation Question Three.

What have you learned from audience feedback?

The way in which I collected audience feedback was by having walked around the class, handing out a questionnaire which said what they would like to see me improve on the magazine. As well as this, I asked each of them for a rating out of ten on the current production. I felt this was the only things that I needed to know In regards to my magazine production. This is because I asked for a detailed response from the audience. I then went on to note down what had been said before thinking through the different ideas. This was helpful for me as it turned out to make my magazine a lot more detailed as well as better than before. The main response from the audience when asking for feedback was the colour scheme being wrong. This is because on my first attempt at the magazine, and when I handed the questionnaire out, my magazine contained 5-6 colours which the audience didn't agree looked attractive. A few of them said that I should go with the three colour rule and only have up to three colours throughout the magazine that represents the magazine fully. Because of this feedback from the audience, I managed to change it to how they please, in which made my magazine look a whole lot more attractive than it did the first time.

The main reason why I agreed with the audience when they gave me feedback is because its their magazine to buy, and so I will need to fulfil their needs in order to sell it to them as a product. If I stayed with my production, and ignored the feedback, then I would be at rock bottom and my magazine wouldn't sell at all. Another thing I learnt from audience feedback is that they give a variety of responses meaning that I have a lot of stuff to work towards in order to improve my magazine to the audiences needs. Regarding the question about the rating of the magazine, the general answer was that it looked attractive at first sight and looked well done. When they took a look at the double page spread, and read through the information, they seemed to like that as well, and it earned a few giggles from people in various parts of it.

However, as it is a feedback from the audience, there was also quite a few negatives being involved. The main negative was that the font wasn't too attractive, and didn't stand out. Because of this, I was bale to collect the information they had given me, take it in to consideration and make the changes to the work. When questioning them after the font change, the general comments were that it was a massive improvement compared to the last font. Another standing out negative that was given back by the audience were that the shade around the writing was too small and that it had needed to be lengthened out a little more in order to make the writing stand out to the audience.

The main point of emphasis from the audience feedback is that it gave me the opportunity to improve the magazine from their very own point of view, allowing me to complete what they want on the magazine. It also gives the audience the chance to be part of the creation of the magazine. It also ensures me that they would then buy the magazine if the changes they requested was to be made.

Research and Planning: Naming The Magazine

While researching music magazines that stand out to me, I couldn't help but notice the names of the magazines and the companies were mostly selected in to sort of a same semantic field. An example of this is that some of the magazines have three letters within their names. 'NME' is one of the more popular kind of magazine names which contains no more than three letters. On the other hand their is magazines which is an actual word, and not just three words shortened down in to their initials. The main one I noticed is the name 'Kerrang'. To me, I believe that the full words look more attractive than the initials. This is because they take up more room along the header of the page. This is an advantage because more effects can be used to make the title stand out a lot more.

As well as this, from what I have seen from the 'NME' magazines, the title doesn't look anything special as it looks too short. It also isn't as catchy as what it should probably be. Where as longer titles enable more effects to be used, and looks really catchy.

The reason why I decided to call the magazine 'TrendLines' is because I wanted to relate the title to a popular song in order to make it catchy to the audience. After naming it TrendLines, it is pretty obvious that it takes after the recent chart topper Blurred Lines. I believe that the name of the magazine also matches what some of the magazine is about. This is because part of the magazine is to do with the charts and the latest trends. This can relate to the title of my magazine. This explains one of the main reasons why I chose the title. I also wanted to be slightly different to some of the more professional magazines when referring back to the name of my magazine.

Due to the name of the magazine slightly being taken from a very popular song, it is obvious that I want the audience to be attracted to the magazine. It also shows the genre of the magazine within the title. This is because the song 'Blurred Lines' is related to the charts and pop music. However this is one of few genres within the magazine. I am planning to use indie bands which are made up as well. This will make the magazine a little more interesting as indie music is getting more and more mainstream.

Evaluation Question Two.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My magazine represents social groups in all types of ways. The main way in which my product attempts to represent particular social groups is by having a different genres of music. For example, my magazine includes information mainly about an indie band called 'The Wall Breakers' but also includes names such as Drake and Kanye West within the front cover of the magazine. This puts the rap aspect in to the magazine. Because of this, the indie and rap folk will enjoy the magazine as it includes their type of music bands and artists. When they see the names of the musicians included on the cover, they will want to buy the magazine. It represents different social groups in different ways. If there was a group of friends who were in to indie music, then they would enjoy the magazine, and once they see the names on the front of the magazine, they would want to buy it.

As well as this, the front cover contains a member of the main band with mask on. The audience will want to know what the situation is regarding the image. As well as this, the fans of the band will want to find out what the situation is all about. Additionally, the magazine is aimed at the years 17 to 25, ranging from males and females. Because the range of the age is between around 17-25 years old, it opens up a massive variation of a target audience and therefore allows a much wider approach on to the audience for both rap and indie music. With the colours being used, and with the mask being used, it represents a notorious manner as such. This is because the mask used can mean a whole bunch of things, including bad representations. Within the double page spread of the magazine, I went in to detail about the mask situation, explaining a variety of ways in which the mask could have been used as well as giving examples. This opens up a massive range of possibilities and allows the audience to think for themselves.

With the type of music being used are both rap and indie, it allows a massive variety of music taste. The social groups of these two genres of music will usually be teens, maybe young adults. They can also be seen as a trendy topic of music. The main reason why the two genres of music might be for teens is down to the fact that it is very stereotypical that teens like either one or the other when it comes to rap and indie. On the double page spread, I have mainly focused on the mask situation regarding one of the made up indie bands. This is because I feel as though that would attract even more of an audience from most social groups, whether they are indie or not. As well as this, it refers back to the front cover, and explains it a lot more to the audience, which they would appreciate. Adding on to this, I have used a picture of the person behind the mask revealing his face with the mask beside him. This shows the audience what hey wanted to see and one of the main reasons on why they brought the magazine. I feel as though the front cover is a persuasive front cover as it makes the reader want to buy the magazine to know further information about the certain situation. I believe I have used the situation smartly in this case.

Evaluation Question One.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

There are many ways in which my product can challenge those within the media. One of the ways is how the whole magazine is laid out, including the fonts. Throughout the process of the magazine in which I created, I aimed to slightly duplicate a magazine in which I had found on the internet. Because of this, I had a layout in which I could aim for. Due to the magazine in which I found, it gave me a clear idea of what a professional magazine looks like and therefore gave me tips throughout the creation of my own product. With the help of the magazine I had found, not only did the layout inspire me to use a similar style, but also the colours used. I thought it looked really attractive and therefore gave me the idea to use similar colours in order to make mine look just as attractive.

My product also includes just three colours. This is because of the three colour rule in which I had found in my research before I started on the magazine. When researching the three colour rule, it became very clear to me that it was a great idea to employ it on my magazine creation. When researching a lot of other music magazines, I could clearly see that the more attractive magazines had only been involved with a maximum of four colours. Where as the magazines with more colours looked slightly over-coloured and unattractive. Throughout my research, I also found that the three colours used in magazines were slightly bright, with the exception of maybe one colour. The more common colours i had found through the research were White, black and red. The way in which my magazine challenges those within the media regarding the colour is that I have used the three colour rule, and included the colours white, black and yellow.

The way in which I use other products within the media is to inspire my product. A prime example was my research in to the double page spread before I had started developing it. After plenty of research in to different double page spreads, I had come across a few brilliant ones that stood out massively and which I could use to aim for and make it just as attractive. The more attractive ones were the more professional ones and so therefore was the double page spreads that I attempted to make my product look like slightly. I also took a copy of a front cover which I really like and stood out to me. I used that front cover to stay on track with. I took ideas from the front cover and employed them in to my own product to make my magazine cover a lot more attractive. I developed the ideas from the front cover on to my very own product, and developed them a lot more for them to fit in perfectly with the rest of my magazine.

Three Colour Theory

The Three Coloured Theory

From recent research on available music magazines, i have found out that each one of them use certain colours in order to make the magazine stand out. I have found out that most magazines are represented by no more than 3-4 colours throughout the cover, contents and double page spread. This may be because it helps the magazines stand out to the audience and make it easier to read. This is a lot better for the magazine because if there was too many colours being used on the cover, the audience won't know where to look. For example, a magazine may have a black background, with white writing and red speech bubbles would be fairly readable and be within the three colours that are usually used. however, if a front cover was to have more than, for example 5 colours, it may look too multicoloured and therefore not as attractive. The example to the right hand side is a 'VIBE' magazine that contains only three colours throughout the cover. Noticeably, there is yellow, white and black colours being used. As far as i can see, there are no other colours within the cover. In my opinion, this magazine looks a lot more attractive compared to other magazines that contain much more colour.
The magazine to the right contains more than three colours on the magazine. It may stand out because of the light colours, but the amount of colours and because of how bright it is, I don't believe it looks quite as good. As well as this, the magazine to the right also contains a lot of pop ups on the sides which take up a lot of the main image.

Overall, for my magazine, I believe that I am going to use a maximum of three colours for my front cover, contents and double page spread. This is because it will be less complicated for the audience and looks a lot more attractive. I also find it a lot easier to keep it to a more simple colour scheme rather than having multi-colours covering my magazine.
